A

AERIAL LADDER

An aerial device consisting of a single or multiple-section rung ladder with a platform at the top.

AERIAL PLATFORM

A mobile device that has an adjustable position platform, supported from ground level by a structure.

ALIGNER

See Wale.

ALLOWABLE LOAD

The load limit at which the item is to be used. The maximum allowable load is usually the duty rating of the scaffold: Light Duty, Medium Duty or Heavy Duty. For loads that are in excess of the Heavy Duty rating the scaffold needs to be engineered.

ANCHOR

A device to secure any item of form work or scaffold to a rigid point.

ANCHORAGE

A secure means of attachment to which the personal fall arrest system is connected.

ANGELWING

A small specialized light duty man basket especially adapted to use on or with structural I-Beams or other structural members.

ANGULATED ROPING

A method of stage suspension in which the upper wire rope sheaves or suspension points are closer to the plane of the building face than the corresponding attachment points on the stage, thus causing the platform to press against the face of the building during its vertical travel.

ANSI

AMERICAN NATIONAL STANDARDS INSTITUTE

An organization which develops standard safety specifications and procedures for a wide range of industrial equipment, including ladders and scaffolds. Many regulations are based on these standards.

APPROVED

Accepted by the authority having jurisdiction.
