The edges of a scaffold platform that exceed the maximum allowable horizontal distance away from a sturdy, continuous vertical surface (such as a building wall) or a sturdy, continuous surface (such as a floor). This is normally a distance of 14- to 16- inches, but may be greater or lesser depending upon the type of work to be performed on the platform and the particular safety standard under which the work is being performed.  In Alberta an open side is defined in the OHS code as 250 mm or 10 inches and some form of fall protection will be required if exceeded.
