WALE

A long horizontal member (usually double) used to hold shoring panels in position; also called waler, ranger.

WEATHERPROOF

Equipment so constructed or protected that exposure to the weather will not interfere with its operation.

A member which separates flanges on a beam.

WEDGE

A piece of wood or metal tapering to a thin edge, used to adjust elevation, tighten formwork, etc.

WELL WHEEL

A metal pulley assembly used with a rope for hoisting materials.

WHEEL LOCK

A locking device which keeps the wheel of a scaffold from rotating.

WHIPPING

A small cord wrapped around the end of a rope to prevent it from unlaying or unwinding.

WINDING DRUM HOIST

A type of hoisting machine that accumulates the suspension wire rope on the drum of the hoist.
